The American Lakes Series

This series was started in 1944 by The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Its initial focus was to provide a comprehensive history of the five Great Lakes. As the series progressed it appeared to the editor, Milo M. Quaife, and the publisher that there was a demand from the public for more titles devoted to other American Lakes. As a result, five additional titles were added.

Very good+ in dark green cloth covered boards with very modest rubbing to the corners of the spine. In a very good+ unclipped dust jacket with light rubbing and wear to the corners of the spine area. Signed by the author on a specially tipped in page. The 8th volume in The Lakes of America Series and one of the more difficult ones to locate. 432 pages including an index. Overall a beautiful copy!

The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is rubbed as it is at the lower edge of the front board. There is a prior owner's colorful book plate on the second free end page. There are a number of pages with underlining and notes in the margins. In a good price clipped dust jacket with numerous shallow (1/8" deep) chips and closed tears across the upper edge of the jacket and with several tape repairs on the lower edge and rear panel. The eighth volume in The Lakes of America Series and one of the more difficult titles in the series to locate. 432 pages including an index, bibliographic notes and text.

Very good+ in green cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and gilt text and decorations on the front board with map end sheets. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is lightly worn and rubbed. In a very good+ price clipped dust jacket with a 1/4" deep by 1/2" wide chip from the lower edge of the spine area and with 1/16" deep chipping across the upper edge of the spine area and with small 1/8" chips from the fore corners of the front panel. Very good in decorated green cloth covered boards with gilt text stamping on the spine and front board. There is a 2 inch dampness stain on the top edge of the text block which has invaded approximately the upper 1/2" of the pages beneath it. In a good unclipped dust jacket with a 1" deep by 1 1/2" wide chip at the upper edge of the front panel, 1/16" deep chips across the upper edge of the spine area insect damage across the lower 1/2" of the rear panel. The first volume in The American Lakes Series edited by Milo M. Quaife. 398 pages including an index.

Roll over Image to expand Lake Michigan by Milo Quaife, First Edition Published by The Bobb-Merrill Co. in Indianapolis: 1944. Very near fine in decorated green cloth covered boards with map end sheets. The cloth at the head of the spine is lightly worn, creased and puckered inward and there is a very small, yet attractive prior owner's book plate on the front paste down hidden by the flap of the jacket. A printer's error appears on page 31 where there is smudging of the ink. Despite this flaw the text on the page remains very readable. In a very good+ price clipped dust jacket with tiny chips from the ends of the spine area which is also slightly faded and there is a small area at the lower edge of the front panel which is worn near the front flap. The third volume in The American Lakes Series. 384 pages containing an index and bibliographical notes. Illustrated with black and white photographs throughout.

In a very good+ price clipped dust jacket with 1/8" deep chips at opposite corners of the spine area and with light rubbing and wear across the upper edge of the jacket. In a very good+ price clipped dust jacket with two very small, shallow chips from the ends of the spine area and a 1/4" by 1/4" deep chip from the upper edge of the rear panel. The second and rather uncommon volume in The American Lakes Series. 376 pages containing an index and bibliographical notes. On the whole, a very handsome and collectible copy of a tough book to find in an acceptable jacket.
