Some Background Information on The Civilization of the American Indian Series

Although the Lakeside Classics series may be the oldest continuously running series of Americana, the University of Oklahoma Press' production of The Civilization of the American Indian Series is definitely the largest. As of 2001 it contained 236 volumes and more are added with each new year. The series started in 1932 with the purpose of reconstructing "American Indian Civilization by presenting aboriginal, historical and contemporary Indian life." (For an excellent overview on this series one should consult Larry Blumenfeld's article which appears in the May 1996 issue of Firsts Magazine.) The titles which follow represent only a fraction of the titles produced in the series.

Fine in black paper covered boards with silver and red colored text stamping on the spine. A small quarto measuring 9" by 6". In a very good+ dust jacket with moderate wear and rubbing at the ends of the spine area and at the folds with a 1/4" chip from the upper fore corner of the front panel. The 169th volume in The Civilization of The American Indian Series. 416 pages including an index and bibliography. Illustrated with maps, photographs and reproductions of earlier works of art. Although a second printing it is the first by the University of Oklahoma Press with revisions.

The Modocs and Their War by Keith A. Murray, Fifth Printing Published by University of Okllahoma Press in Norman: 1959. Fine in yellow paper covered boards with red and black text and decorations on the spine. There is a prior owner's book plate on the first free end paper. In a near fine dust jacket with hints of rubbing at the ends of the spine area with the original price intact on the front flap. The 52nd volume in the Civilization of the American Indians Series. The entire first edition of this title was destroyed by fire in Kansas City, MO before any copies were made available for circulation.

Near fine in reddish cloth covered boards with a gilt on dark red text block on the spine. The cloth on the boards has a mottled appearance. In a very good+, price clipped dust jacket with light rubbing and wear to the ends of the spine area and to folds of the flaps. The 68th volume in the Civilization of the American Indian Series. 249 pages including an index and list of titles in the series. Illustrated with several black and white photographs.

The 48th volume in The Civilization of the American Indian Series 287 pages. Illustrated with five sections of black and white photographs.
