Henry, John Joseph:  Account of Arnold's Campaign against Quebec and of the Hardships and Sufferings of that Band of Heroes.  Albany: Joel Munsell, 1877. Reprint of 1877. Very good in decorated dark green cloth covered boards with black decorations stamped on the spine and front board and with gilt text stamping on the spine. A small octavo measuring 7 5/8 by 5 inches with an early prior owner's name in ink on the second free end page and at the top edge of the title page. The complete title reads: “Account of Arnold’s Campaign Against Quebec and of the Hardships and Sufferings of that Band of Heroes who Traversed the Wilderness of Maine from Cambridge to the St. Lawrence, in the Autumn of 1775.” The account is written by “one of the survivors.” 198 pages including an index, an appendix, text and one map as the frontispiece. Originally printed in Lancaster in 1812 by William Greer and revised in 1844. Considered by Howes to be a “mildly scarce” book. This printing of the book contains a memoir of John Joseph Henry by his grandson which provides much detail on Henry’s life before and after his involvement with the American army. Henry was from Pennsylvania and joined a company of riflemen under the command of Captain Matthew Smith in 1775 whose intent was to join up with Arnold’s forces in Boston before their march on Quebec through the Maine woods. The trials and privations of this band of approximately 1,000 men was legendary. They arrived at Quebec in November of 1775 and ultimately suffered a major defeat with the loss of General Montgomery, the wounding of Arnold and the capture of Henry who then spent nine months in a Quebec prison.
