An octavo measuring 9 by 6 3/4 inches. Issued without a dust jacket and it is lacking the paper covered slip case. The Hobbit is the first story in Tolkien's grand work. With illustrations by the author. 317 pages of text followed by the map mentioned above. A very handsome and collectable copy with no prior ownership markings of any kind. The first two pages following the table of contents are illustrated with a map of "The Desolation of Smaug" and the rear two free end papers are illustrated with a map of Wilderland.

Fine in green cloth with gilt text stamping on the spine and with gilt decorations on the spine and on the front board. The top edge of the text block is stained a light red. In a very good+, unclipped dust jacket with a number of short closed tears to the upper and lower edges of the spine area and a 1" long closed tear at the upper corner of the front panel. This copy is the true first printing with "Father" for "Farmer" on the third free end paper. This title is the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tipped into the rear of the book is a fold-out map of "Beleriand and the Lands of the North" which is in fine condition. Silmarillion is the story of the First Age of Tolkien's grand work. It was published four years after the death of the author by his son, Christopher Tolkien who edited this work from the journals kept by his father. 365 pages including an index of names, an appendix, and text .
