The Rivers of America Series for Young Readers

A set of nine volumes published as a subset of The Rivers of America Series by Holt, Rinehart and Winston between 1972 to 1970. Only three of these volumes were written by the original authors of the main series. The publisher targeted sales to school and public libraries. As a result, most of the copies which have been found and resold in the secondary markets have a "reinforced library binding". The format for each of the volumes was slightly larger than those in the original series. The photograph below provides a representation of the young readers series with one of the volumes from the main series included for size comparison purposes.

Many collectors attempting to collect entire main series will typically add the titles in the "young readers" series as well.

A Special Note regarding the most detailed and exacting bibliography I have yet seen: As many of my customers know, Carol Fitzgerald of Florida worked for many years collecting and researching every book in the Rivers of America series. During that time I was honored to assist her in adding a few of the more unusual titles to her extensive collection of first editions and reprints. Her work on the series culminated in a wonderfully thorough, extensive and highly detailed bibliography that has set a new standard in bibliographic achievement. Her masterpiece was completed in July of 2001. The work is titled: The Rivers of America: A Descriptive Bibliography. It is a two volume, hardbound set containing 1,020 pages of text and illustrations in color and black and white. Each book in the series is described in extensive detail with measurements, collation, printing history and biographical information on the author and illustrator. The publisher's list price for the set is $125.00. I am accepting orders for this set at the publisher's list price plus shipping costs. Fine in illustrated cloth covered boards with a reinforced front and rear hinge. In a near fine price clipped dust jacket with machine clipped flap corners with the price of "$3.75" at the lower center of the front flap. One of the titles in the Rivers of America Series for young readers. Illustrated by Leonard Vosburgh. 154 pages containing an index, text and illustrations.

The Susquehanna from New York to the Chesapeake by Carl Carmer, First Edition First printing. Published by Garrard Pub. Company in Champaign: 1964. Fine in green cloth covered boards with black text on the spine. In a very good+ dust jacket with a 1/8" chip at the base of the spine area and lightly rubbed at the folds to the flap. Although this is not one of the volumes in the Rivers of America for Young Adults, it is frequently added to a collection of same.
